🌡️ Climate of Northwestern Argentina

The Northwest of Argentina (NOA), which includes the provinces of Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca, and Santiago del Estero, is a transitional zone between tropical and temperate climates, featuring great diversity due to altitude and topography.

Climatic conditions are mainly influenced by:

  • The tropical Atlantic system, which brings warm, humid air during summer and causes seasonal rains.
  • The Andes Mountains, which block Pacific moisture and create orographic rainfall on the eastern slopes.

1. Eastern Region – Chaco Salteño

  • Semi-arid climate with a dry winter season.
  • Average annual rainfall: ~500 mm.
  • Temperature extremes: +47 °C in summer and –5 °C in winter.

2. Western Region – Puna

  • High-altitude arid climate.
  • Rainfall: <200 mm/year.
  • Average annual temperature: ~10 °C. Large day-night thermal range.

3. Valleys and Yungas (North, Center, South)

  • Temperate to subtropical mountain climate, with a dry winter.
  • Rainfall ranges between 700 and 2000 mm/year depending on slope orientation.
  • Average temperatures: >20 °C in summer, <14 °C in winter.

The city of Salta experiences a warm season from October to February, with long days, pleasant temperatures, and summer rains. Winter is dry, with mild days and cold nights.
