New Requirement to Enter Argentina: Health Insurance Now Mandatory for Tourists

Starting July 1, 2025, all foreign nationals entering Argentina as tourists must have mandatory health insurance that covers medical expenses during their stay in the country.

This new regulation, officially announced by the National Government on May 28, is part of a broader immigration reform and will be mandatory for foreign citizens under various entry categories.

Who is affected by this measure?

The requirement applies to:

  • Visitors on short- or long-term stays

  • International students

  • Temporary workers

  • Individuals entering Argentina for personal, work-related, or transit reasons, even for brief visits such as weekend trips

What is required to enter?

Travelers must complete a sworn statement before entering the country, declaring that they hold valid health insurance that covers any medical needs during their time in Argentina.

According to the official decree, the aim is to “regularize access to the health system, education, residence, and deportations.”

What happens in case of a medical emergency?

Emergency medical care will not be denied, but regular assistance at public hospitals will only be provided to those who can prove they have active health insurance.

Who is exempt?

The only people exempt from this requirement are:

  • Argentine citizens

  • Permanent residents in Argentina

They will continue to have full access to the national public health system.

How much does the insurance cost?

According to estimates from various local and international insurance providers, the average cost of short-term health insurance for tourists is around USD 60, though the price may vary depending on the length of stay, age of the traveler, and level of coverage selected.

Important: This policy follows similar measures previously adopted by other countries in the region. In Argentina’s case, the new rule is part of a broader effort to improve organization and access to essential services for both visitors and temporary residents.
