Reaching this remote village becomes a true adventure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iruya was founded in 1753<\/strong>. and the &#8220;Card\u00f3n Abuelo&#8221;\u2014two notable examples of native flora known for their size and longevity within the community.<\/p>\n<h2>History and features of Iruya<\/h2>\n<p>This area was primarily indigenous settlements, the most ancient being the <strong>Ocloyas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They belonged to the <strong>Kolla<\/strong> ethnic group, descended from the <strong>Kollasuyo<\/strong>, one of the four regions of the ancient <strong>Tahuantinsuyo<\/strong> (Inca Empire).<\/p>\n<p>Numerous ruins scattered throughout the area confirm the existence of a more or less homogeneous ethnic group before the arrival of the Spanish.<br \/>\nOne example is the ruins of <strong>Titic\u00f3nte<\/strong>, located 8 km east of Iruya.<\/p>\n<p>The first inhabitants practiced agriculture and livestock farming\u2014both on a very small scale, only for subsistence.<br \/>\nThey grew corn, potatoes, oca, etc., and raised sheep, goats, and llamas.<\/p>\n<p>As in ancient times, <strong>bartering is still one of the most traditional forms of trade in Iruya today<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2244\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2244\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2244 size-medium\" title=\"Condor in Iruya\" src=\"http:\/\/dexotic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/condor-iruya-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Condor in Iruya\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dexotic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/condor-iruya-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dexotic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/condor-iruya-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dexotic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/condor-iruya-600x449.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dexotic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/condor-iruya.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2244\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A condor flying over the Abra del C\u00f3ndor, on the way to Iruya.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Its name means &#8220;Place of high grasslands&#8221;<\/strong>.
